Samil High School Holds 9th Memorial Service for West Sea Defense Day
[News S = Reporter Kim Chung-young] Samil Industrial High School in Suwon (Principal Kim Dong-soo) held the '9th West Sea Defense Day' event in the school auditorium on March 20 in the afternoon.
The event was organized to honor 55 heroes of West Sea defense who sacrificed their lives in the Second Yeonpyeong Naval Battle in 2002 and the Cheonan sinking in 2010.
In particular, the ceremony also included a memorial service for late Senior Master Petty Officer Park Kyung-soo, an alumnus of this school.
The late Senior Master Park enrolled in the Chemical Industry Department at Samil High School in 1996 and participated in the Marine Youth Group. He graduated as part of the 28th graduating class of Samil High School in 1999. After graduation, he enlisted in the Navy as a petty officer and was commissioned in 2001.
As a former member of the Marine Youth Group during his high school years, Park served as a Navy petty officer.
In 2002, he participated in the Second Yeonpyeong Naval Battle and was injured. Later, he was killed in the Cheonan sinking in 2010.
The memorial service proceeded in the order of opening ceremony, flower presentation, video screening, letter reading, and memorial address. Subsequently, a photo exhibition was held to honor the spirit of the late alumnus in collaboration with relevant organizations.
The memorial event was attended by Principal Kim Dong-soo of Samil High School and school staff, 350 students, the parents' association, alumni association, and Han Guk-sung, Director of the Gyeonggi Southern Regional Veterans Welfare Office, among others, to honor the spirits of the fallen heroes.
