Cancer Center to be Built at Yongin Severance Hospital

[News S=Min Ki-ho, Reporter] A cancer center will be built at Yonsei University's Yongin Severance Hospital located in Jung-dong, Giheung-gu, Yongin Special City.

The city announced on the 14th that it has recently approved an architectural permit (for expansion) submitted by Yonsei University to establish a cancer center and faculty research building at Yongin Severance Hospital at Lots 1151 and 2 others in Jung-dong, Giheung-gu.

The scale of the architectural permit approved by the city increased the existing site area from 72,690㎡ to 96,824㎡ (an increase of 24,134㎡), and the total floor area increased from 112,474㎡ to 127,115㎡ (an increase of 14,641㎡).

Yongin Severance Hospital will vertically expand the parking lot site on the left side of the building to 9 stories above ground. The cancer center will be located on floors 1 and 2, educational facilities on floor 3, and faculty research offices on floors 4 through 9.

With the establishment of the cancer center, the existing faculty research space in the hospital building will relocate to the research building, and that space will be converted into inpatient wards. As the number of beds increases, inpatient treatment services for patients will expand accordingly.

The hospital also plans to install an auditorium, seminar rooms, and multipurpose rooms in the educational facility to help medical staff connect clinical practice and research.

Following the city's approval of the architectural permit, construction of the cancer center and faculty research building will commence in the second half of this year. The completion date is scheduled for January 2028.

Mayor Lee Sang-il stated, "As Yongin Severance Hospital is a key medical facility for the health of citizens, the addition of the research building to house the cancer center and faculty research facilities will significantly improve the quality of medical services provided to patients at the hospital, and will enhance convenience for citizens using the hospital."

Hospital Director Park Jin-o said, "The establishment of the cancer center is intended to provide a foundation for local residents to receive comprehensive treatment in a nearby location quickly," adding, "As Yongin's only university hospital, we will further strengthen our capabilities in treating and managing severe conditions including cancer."

Yongin Severance Hospital, which opened in 1983, relocated to its current location in Giheung-gu, Yongin City in March 2020 with a newly constructed building.
