Inheriting the Spirit of King Jeongjo: '35th King Jeongjo Calligraphy and Literati Painting Exhibition'...Suwon Citizens' Works Open for Submission from the 17th

The 35th King Jeongjo Calligraphy and Literati Painting Exhibition, hosted by the Suwon Calligraphers Association in Suwon Special City—a city of filial piety embracing Suwon Hwaseong, a UNESCO World Heritage site—is enriching Suwon's autumn.

The Suwon Calligraphers Association (Chairman Hong Hak-seon), comprising the Korean Artists Association, Calligraphers Association, Calligraphers' Guild, and Korean Calligraphy Association, announced on the 5th that the calligraphy and literati painting exhibition will hold an exhibition centered on works selected through open calls for calligraphy works from Suwon citizens who love calligraphy.

The submission categories include Hangul (including mixed Korean and Chinese characters), Chinese characters, literati painting, stone carving, seal carving, caligraphy, and folk painting. Work submissions will be accepted from September 17 to 19 for three days at the Suwon Calligraphers Association (Shimwondang Gallery, 8 Gwanggyo-san-ro, Jangan-gu, Suwon).

Selected award-winning works following the judges' review will be exhibited at the Gyeonggi Art Museum (formerly Gyeonggi Cultural Arts Center) from November 3 to 8, and an awards ceremony will also be held on the 3rd when the exhibition opens.

At the awards ceremony, one Grand Prize winner (Suwon Mayor's Award) will receive 2 million won in prize money, one Excellence Prize winner (Suwon City Council Speaker's Award) will receive 1 million won, up to three Outstanding Prize winners will each receive 500,000 won, and up to five Samche Prize winners will each receive 300,000 won.

Suwon Calligraphers Association Chairman Hong Hak-seon said, "The King Jeongjo Calligraphy and Literati Painting Exhibition has become well-established as a traditional art form that harmonizes perfectly with the image of Suwon Hwaseong, where tradition and history live and breathe and King Jeongjo's dreams are enshrined," and added, "Thanks to the senior artists who have gone before us, we have produced excellent artists. Not only serving as a gateway for local calligraphy and literati painting, the exhibition has become firmly established as Suwon's representative exhibition and the only calligraphy open call competition remaining uniquely in Suwon."
