Mayor Shin Gye-yong of Gwacheon: Committed to Successful Completion and Settlement of Knowledge Information Town
Gwacheon City held a 'working group meeting' on June 21 at the DeTech Tower Future Hall to ensure the successful completion of the Gwacheon Knowledge Information Town public housing district and the stable settlement of residents.
The meeting was attended by representatives of Gwacheon City, prospective and current residents of multi-family housing, and relevant agencies including the Korea Land & Housing Corporation (LH), the project operator, to discuss the status of living infrastructure development within the Knowledge Information Town and measures to address major civil complaints.
In particular, Gwacheon City has been advancing Phase 2 infrastructure projects, steadily resolving key tasks for improving residents' pedestrian environments and enhancing living conditions. Following the final implementation of plans for new underground public passageways through changes to the district plan for the Knowledge Information Town public housing district, the city is currently proceeding with detailed design consultations to diversify entrances to the underground public passageways without delay.
The cultural and sports facilities that began construction in November 2025 are progressing smoothly with a target completion date of July 2027. Additionally, to alleviate traffic congestion and distribute traffic volume around the Galhyeon Intersection, 'Gwacheon-daero 12-gil' between the S1 and S2 blocks is scheduled to open in October.
Furthermore, in response to requests to create 'eco-friendly soundproof forests' instead of installing large noise barriers along sections adjacent to Gwacheon-daero to secure views and improve urban aesthetics, the city requested that the project operator carefully review not only methods to meet legal noise standards but also comprehensive urban landscape considerations from technical and administrative perspectives. The project operator responded that it would re-conduct noise analysis on National Route 47 to re-analyze objective data.
Based on the Phase 2 achievements, Gwacheon City will check the final phases of infrastructure construction while concentrating administrative efforts in close cooperation with the Korea Land & Housing Corporation and relevant agencies on the remaining Phase 3 major infrastructure projects. Key initiatives include △Gwacheon-daero reduction project △Underground public passageway completion △New Gwacheon Information Town Station △Neighborhood Park 3 development △Main construction of (tentatively named) Gwacheon Knowledge Middle School.
Mayor Shin Gye-yong of Gwacheon stated, "Although there remains inconvenience to citizens as landscape and infrastructure work continue, we are continuously communicating with relevant agencies and steadily resolving major issues. During the handover process, we will actively exercise the city's administrative capabilities and will do our utmost to ensure that the Gwacheon Knowledge Information Town settles as an eco-friendly, advanced premium city by completing the remaining Phase 3 core infrastructure projects without disruption."
