Gwacheon Mayor Shin Gye-yong Holds Solo Protest at PM's Official Residence Against Government Complex and Racing Park Relocation
Gwacheon Mayor Shin Gye-yong held a solo protest with a picket sign in front of the Prime Minister's Official Residence on the 14th.
He expressed opposition to the relocation of the Gwacheon Government Complex and Racing Park, which is being pushed forward by the government without the consent of Gwacheon citizens, as well as to the government's unilateral housing supply policy.
On this day, Mayor Shin held a protest in front of the Prime Minister's Official Residence with a placard reading "Do not forcibly proceed with the relocation of the Gwacheon Government Complex and Racing Park or unilateral housing supply without citizen consent."
Mayor Shin urged that the opinions of Gwacheon City and its citizens be reflected when making policies that have significant impacts on Gwacheon's future.
Gwacheon City previously held a press conference with citizens on September 3 demanding a complete withdrawal of the plan to supply 9,800 households on the Racing Park and Army Counter-Intelligence Command sites.
Subsequently, on September 10, it held a press conference opposing the Justice Ministry's relocation and raised concerns about the weakening of administrative city functions and urban depopulation due to the successive relocations of major government agencies, urging a review of the Justice Ministry relocation plan and the establishment of an official consultation body between the government and Gwacheon City.
In continuation of this, starting with the first solo protest on October 8 on the occasion of the 100th day of the ninth term of civilian government, it continues to convey to the government concerns about the weakening of administrative city functions and excessive housing supply, and demands that the government halt its unilateral policy implementation without citizen consent.
Mayor Shin Gye-yong of Gwacheon stated, "In addition to announcing large-scale housing supply beyond the capacity of a small city, I absolutely cannot accept the government's unilateral policy of destroying urban functions by relocating major government agencies without any countermeasures. Even if it is a small city with a small population, the government must respect the voice of Gwacheon citizens and must come up with responsible measures to maintain administrative city functions and prevent urban depopulation."
