Breaking "Kim Jong Un Arrives in China's Dandong via New Yalu River Bridge," Reuters, AP Issue Urgent Reports
Major foreign news agencies including Reuters, AP, and AFP on the 24th simultaneously issued urgent reports on Chairman of the State Affairs Commission Kim Jong Un's visit to China, citing reports from South Korean government authorities and media.
According to foreign media reports, Chairman Kim arrived in Dandong on the same day via the New Yalu River Bridge connecting North Korea's Sinuiju and China's Liaoning Province Dandong. Japan's Kyodo News reported that strict traffic controls were implemented on major roads in Dandong, near the New Yalu River Bridge, and around the Chinese People's Volunteers Memorial Museum, with accommodations at some local hotels restricted.
Foreign media presented multifaceted analysis on the background and diplomatic significance of this China visit.
AP News evaluated this move as North Korea's attempt to improve economic recovery through improved relations with China following recent closer ties with Russia, and to establish a joint front to counter the United States. Hong Kong's South China Morning Post (SCMP) and HK01 noted the use of the New Yalu River Bridge, which was officially opened on the 15th of this month after 12 years since completion, and projected that it would become a major corridor for future bilateral trade and logistics expansion.
The British Guardian and others dismissed recent health concerns and death rumors that had spread mainly on overseas social media, reporting that North Korea demonstrated state governance stability through diplomatic moves.
Meanwhile, Reuters reported that it requested official comments from China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs but did not receive immediate responses, adding that official announcements from Chinese authorities and whether a summit meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping would be held have yet to be confirmed.
