Uiwang City Council holds communication meeting with Youth Participation Committee
Uiwang City Council in Gyeonggi Province announced on the 20th that it held a "communication meeting with the Uiwang City Youth Participation Committee" to reflect the authentic voices of local youth in municipal affairs and to share democratic values.
The meeting, held on the 19th, was attended by Council Chair Seo Chang-su, five city council members, and 14 student representatives from the Uiwang City Youth Participation Committee.
During the gathering, participants engaged in candid discussions about local issues felt by youth and sought practical policy alternatives.
The event was conducted as a program enabling youth to directly experience the roles and functions of local councils. Participants toured key council facilities including the main chamber, committee rooms, and meeting rooms, observing spaces where actual decision-making takes place, and deepening their understanding of the council's operational system and the ordinance-making process.
Particularly notable was that this event departed from the existing passive participation model, with Youth Participation Committee representatives giving a presentation directly introducing their activities and achievements to date, adding greater significance. Student representatives explained in detail the community issues from a youth perspective and the activities they have been pursuing to resolve them.
During the subsequent question-and-answer and suggestion session, youth representatives actively proposed local community problems and improvement measures they had felt, engaging in spirited discussion. Students presented ideas including expanding cultural and welfare infrastructure for youth and expanding communication with the council.
In response, council members empathized with the shortage of spaces for "rest" and "recreation" and promised to reflect the suggestions in policy.
Additionally, the city council plans to expand communication channels with various sectors and implement an "open council" and "communicative council affairs" that all citizens can feel.
Council Chair Seo Chang-su said, "In seeing youth leaders for the future taking direct interest in municipal affairs and presenting creative opinions, I could see a bright future for Uiwang City," and added, "I will do my best to ensure that the precious opinions proposed at today's meeting do not remain mere suggestions, but lead to actual ordinance enactments and budget reflections."
