[News S=Reporter Lee Min-jeong] Sannam Elementary School in Suwon (Principal Lee Kyung-suk; hereinafter Sannam Elementary School) has been selected as an excellent school for the Gyeonggi Province Office of Education-designated '2023 Character Branding Initiative' (hereinafter referred to as excellent school). Sannam Elementary School's selection as an excellent school is the only one among elementary schools in Suwon.

The 'excellent school' designation is awarded to schools that have established a character brand for the school and operated concentrated practice weeks, thereby forming good consensus among the educational community on the importance of character education.

Through gathering opinions from the educational community that included students and parents, Sannam Elementary School created the brand 'MAUM+ (Heart Plus) Project: Adding Character Competencies' and operated character education programs including △MIND (Adding Heart) △ADD (Adding Cultural Arts) △UP (Adding Humanities) △MOVE (Adding Playtime and Health).

Specific activities included △Happiness Steps event (welcoming students at school) △Hand of Love Greetings △Visiting Art Performances, operated with grade-level specific themes to ensure that students leading the programs gain confidence, and their smiles are filled with growth and learning.

Meanwhile, Sannam Elementary School plans to make further efforts in student character education through an even more developed MAUM+ (Heart Plus) Project this year.

Kang Ju-eun, All-School Student Council President, said, "Through the welcoming events and character playgrounds organized by the student council, we came to have a sense of mutual respect among friends. It was great to have time to think about the things that make me happy," she added.

Principal Lee Kyung-suk stated, "The more unstable society becomes and the more distrust and confusion among the educational community increases, the more important character education becomes. If we hope for a society where everyone is happy rather than individual success, it is time to pay attention to character education," she said.
