Editorial Exercise Greater Caution for Visitor Safety at '2026 Suwon National Heritage Night Excursion'
Once again this year, the festival '2026 Suwon National Heritage Night Excursion - The Tenth Night, Suwon Yeonhyang,' which allows visitors to enjoy a summer evening in Suwon, will be held for three days from August 14 to 16 at Suwon Hwaseong, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and surrounding cultural facilities. The Suwon National Heritage Night Excursion is a signature nighttime event hosted by Suwon Special City, organized by the Suwon Cultural Foundation, and sponsored by the National Heritage Administration. During the festive evening gathering where people, light, music, and stories blend together, visitors can enjoy diverse performances, exhibitions, and experiences at Suwon Hwaseong and surrounding cultural facilities.
This year, in particular, the event venue, which was previously held mainly around Yongyeon, has been expanded to include Hwaseong Haenggung Plaza and areas near Paldalmun Gate. This allows visitors to enjoy the night of Suwon Hwaseong in a more diverse and expansive manner. Furthermore, it is expected to breathe new life into nearby commercial areas.
The program consists of '8 Nights' featuring eight themes: △night scenery (夜景) △night pathways (夜路) △night history (夜史) △night paintings (夜畵) △night tales (夜說) △night markets (夜市) △night dining (夜食) △night stays (夜宿), and with street performers from local arts communities taking to key locations throughout the venue, every corner of the historic district becomes a vibrant festival ground.
There is a reason why Suwon City is showing such genuine commitment to the festival. It is because opportunities for citizens' cultural enjoyment expand. At the same time, it draws both domestic and foreign visitors, widely publicizes Suwon's value, and contributes to the local economy.
At a forum titled 'Cultural Impact Assessment: Questioning the Value of Suwon's Three Major Autumn Festivals' held by the Suwon Research Institute for Urban Administration on July 23, the results of the institute's 2025 festival monitoring (foot traffic, card sales, and citizen and tourist surveys) drew attention. The three major autumn festivals of Suwon attracted a combined total of approximately 1.125 million domestic and foreign visitors, significantly expanding citizens' physical and digital cultural enjoyment rights.
Some 100,000 tourists visited the '2025 Suwon National Heritage Night Excursion' held by Suwon City over four days last year. Given the gradual increase in domestic and international travelers visiting Suwon, it is expected that even more people will participate in this year's Suwon Night Excursion.
Therefore, as pointed out at the research institute forum, experiential content that can enhance on-site engagement and entertainment should be strengthened. Additionally, given concerns about congestion with many people visiting the venue until late hours, visitor safety measures must be thoroughly established. Moreover, particular attention must be paid to cultural heritage management, which is easily neglected during nighttime operations. Additionally, considering parking and accessibility for people with disabilities, we hope this will become the most successful night excursion event to date.
