Suwon Hwaseong, Cultural Heritage, Draws Attention as Participatory Educational Mural Project
The Suwon Office of Education has implemented a student-participatory educational environment improvement project titled 'Suwon Hwaseong, Our Pride,' in which students independently decorate indoor school spaces.
The project involves painting and designing indoor spaces such as school corridors with Suwon Hwaseong, a representative cultural heritage site of the region, as the main theme, with direct student participation in the environmental improvement effort.
Students explore the history and architectural characteristics of Suwon Hwaseong and reinterpret and express fortress walls, buildings, and natural environments from their own perspectives. Through this process, they gain experience in directly observing and feeling history and expressing their thoughts through art and design.
Additionally, students naturally come into contact with diverse career fields including architecture, urban planning, design, cultural arts, tourism, and content creation, and it is expected that the completed space can be utilized as an educational resource for exploring the region's historical and cultural heritage as well as future career paths.
The completed space serves as a 'history and art space within school,' where students encounter Suwon Hwaseong daily and cultivate regional pride and a sense of community through artworks created collaboratively by students and their peers.
Kim Hye-ri, Superintendent of the Suwon Office of Education, stated, "The very process of students directly drawing Suwon Hwaseong and transforming school spaces is living history education, art education, and career education," and added, "We will expand this initiative to next year's educational environment improvement projects so that schools can become spaces where students discover and develop their dreams and potential."
