Yongin City Delegation Visits Zuidas Dok Underground Highway Project...Discusses Exchange at Florence City Hall
Lee Sang-il, Mayor of Yongin Special City, who is visiting Europe, visited Florence City Hall in Italy on the 30th (local time) to discuss cooperation and exchange measures. He also visited the Zuidas Dok site, where a highway underground project is underway.
Mayor Lee stated, "Florence is the birthplace of the European Renaissance, and I am deeply moved to be discussing exchange and cooperation between our two cities at Florence City Hall, the headquarters where the Medici family, who led the Renaissance, was active. I hope that Yongin and Florence will establish a sister city relationship and promote exchanges such as student exchanges."
Deputy Mayor Galgani, who attended the meeting, said, "Florence is also actively interested in establishing sister city relationships with excellent cities from abroad. As Yongin, a semiconductor city, is the center of Korea's cutting-edge industries, it would be wonderful if young people in Florence interested in advanced technologies such as semiconductors could have the opportunity to learn at universities in Yongin."
Earlier, Mayor Lee visited the site of the Zuidas Dok project, the underground infrastructure project for the Zuidas area in southern Amsterdam, which is being developed as Europe's premier eco-friendly economic, commercial, and residential complex.
This project is a mega-scale plan to place the expressway (A10) underground, secure surface space to enhance convenience for residents' lives, and transform the Zuidas Station into a multi-modal transportation hub. Yongin City is pursuing a plan to install multi-modal interchange facilities around Guseong Station, adjacent to the highway, in connection with the ongoing Gyeongbu Expressway underground project.
Mayor Lee and the Yongin City delegation heard detailed explanations about the Zuidas Dok project implementation process from Niels van den Brink, the overall traffic manager of the Zuidas Dok program, at the Zuidas Dok Information Center.
The delegation asked questions about various aspects of the project, including how the budget is being secured and what changes will occur in citizens' lives as the project progresses.
The Gyeongbu Expressway underground project involves constructing a 4-lane underground expressway in a 26.1-kilometer section from Giheung Interchange in Yongin to Yangjae Interchange in Seoul.
