A 4-lane road approximately 3.96 kilometers long will be built connecting Yongin's Namsa Wanjang-ri, a key semiconductor industry hub in Gyeonggi Province, with Hwaseong's Dongtan Sindong. The total project cost of approximately 210 billion won will be shared by the two cities.

Hwaseong Special City and Yongin Special City held a project briefing on the 19th at the Dongtan 9-dong Administrative Welfare Center and signed a "Linked Transportation Network Acquisition Memorandum of Understanding for Co-Prosperity between Hwaseong and Yongin" at the Yongin City Namsa Library.

The signing ceremony, attended by Yongin Mayor Lee Sang-il and Hwaseong Mayor Jeong Myeong-geun, took place following the "Hwaseong-Yongin Linked Transportation Co-Prosperity Joint Declaration" jointly announced by the two mayors on November 21 of last year, after narrowing opinions through working-level negotiations.

In particular, Hwaseong and Yongin are geographically adjacent, and with the recent influx of population into Dongtan 2 New City, traffic volume between the two cities is steadily increasing. Moreover, with the full-scale creation of a semiconductor cluster in the Namsa-eup area of Yongin, the two cities have reached this agreement to proactively and jointly address traffic issues.

The agreement includes specific measures such as both cities cooperating to build new roads and expand three roads connecting Yongin's Idong and Namsa with Hwaseong's Dongtan.

The two cities agreed to timely open Local Road No. 84, which connects Cheonni in Idong-eup, Yongin with the northern area of Dongtan (Jungni) in Hwaseong, and Local Road No. 82, which connects Songjeong-ri in Idong-eup, Yongin through Namsa-eup to the southern area of Dongtan (Jangji).

Under the agreement, the two cities will jointly promote a project to build a new 4-lane road (including tunnels and bridges) approximately 3.96 kilometers long between Yongin's Namsa Wanjang-ri and Hwaseong's Dongtan Sindong.

Hwaseong City has conducted a preliminary feasibility study on this road since February, and in September delegated a feasibility study to the Korea Local Administration Research Institute with Yongin City as the lead agency.

Hwaseong City expects that when this road is opened, not only will traffic conditions between the two cities improve, but the distribution of metropolitan traffic volume will also partially alleviate the severe traffic congestion on Local Road No. 23.

Yongin Mayor Lee Sang-il stated, "When the road connecting Wanjang-ri in Namsa-eup, Yongin with Sindong in Dongtan, Hwaseong is completed, traffic flow on Local Roads No. 82 and 84 will improve significantly, and exchanges between citizens of the two cities will also become more active. Yongin City will cooperate with Hwaseong City to build the new road quickly."

The mayors of both cities urged the inclusion of the Gyeonggi Southern East-West Arterial Line (Semiconductor Line) and Gyeonggi Southern Metropolitan Railroad being jointly promoted by the two cities in the 5th National Railroad Network Construction Plan, and resolved to jointly establish strategies going forward for expanding railroad infrastructure.

The Gyeonggi Southern East-West Arterial Line (89.4 kilometers), known as the Semiconductor Line, will run east-west through South Korea's semiconductor industry ecosystem, from Jeonjok Port in Hwaseong through Dongtan, Idong and Namsa in Yongin, to Bupyeong in Icheon, and is expected to greatly facilitate the movement of people and goods.

Hwaseong Mayor Jeong Myeong-geun stated, "Cooperation with Yongin City is not an option but a necessity to solve citizens' transportation problems. We will make continuous efforts to create an environment where citizens can move conveniently through adequate supply of transportation infrastructure."
